Glossybox January 2017 Review

Hi, all!

I’ve been trying like mad to use and review all the makeup goodies I’ve gotten since Christmas, and I’m a little behind on my January sub boxes. I’m trying to get all caught up, and hey, at least it’s still January, right? Well, on to this month’s Glossybox subscription!

oOlution eye love

This eye cream feels good and does relieve my morning puffiness. Keeping it in the fridge makes it even more effective. A little goes a long way, and just a dab is enough for both eyes. It doesn’t do too much for my dark circles, and I don’t really have any bags, but it does a great job of smoothing my under-eye area. It’s most noticeable when I wear concealer, as it almost completely eliminates any creasing. Would I purchase a full size? Probably not, but I’ll definitely finish this one.

Daily Concepts Exfoliating Body Scrubber

This scrubber is gentle on my sensitive skin, but still effective. It’s a nice size, and easy to grip. I find it very invigorating to use, and it keeps my skin soft and glowing. The fact that it’s not overly abrasive means I’m not limited to using it once a week; I can use it whenever I get the urge. It’s nearly gentle enough to use on my face, but not quite. Its texture is somewhere between a loofah and a konjac sponge. Another cool thing about it is that the lettering will eventually wear off the tag, letting you know it’s time for a replacement, which is quite a handy feature.

AG Hair Care Cleansing Cream

Sigh. Another hair care product. I couldn’t use it, of course, but I gave it to my daughter. Who can’t use it because her hair’s currently in braids. That I can’t opt out of certain product types remains one of the few things that I don’t like about Glossybox. I’ll let the little try it when she takes her hair down in a few weeks, and if she doesn’t like it, I’ll just use it for my wigs. That still wouldn’t allow me a proper review of the cleanser, though, because all the wigs in my current rotation are synthetic. So, it’s a miss, for me, not due to its performance but it’s not useful to me.

Theorie des Volcans Noir Eternae Mask Scrub

This mask is the bomb. It includes volcanic rock and other goodies, and has a clay mask consistency. It’s to be applied in a thinner layer than the average mask, so it’s fully dry and washed off in less than ten minutes. This is great for those who don’t have a lot of time for spa treatments. The best thing about this mask, for me, is that it doubles as a scrub. Two treatments in one? Yes, please! The scrubbing particles are very fine, and don’t leave me with red or irritated skin. It gets rid of flakiness with ease, and it’s not as drying as my other clay masks, which I usually avoid until summer. This, I think, is the biggest win in this month’s box, for me.

UB Secret Flush Cream Blusher and Lip Stain Duo

This was the product I was most looking forward to, because it’s a multitasking product and because it was the one makeup product included. I was happy (and surprised) to find that I could even wear a pink blush – I thought that, with my brown skin, I had to stay in the berry or bronze family. This shimmery peachy pink actually looks quite nice. It comes in stick form, and its creamy formula blends beautifully. I used it on my lips, lids, and cheeks. On me, it creates a soft and subtle effect that I really like for daytime wear. I’m wearing it in the photos below. Though it’s a cream, it’s very lightweight, and it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy on the skin. The problem? It sinks into every. Single. Line. Even with my face and lips freshly scrubbed, I experienced creasing and cracking. How disappointing.

So, I wasn’t impressed by this month’s box. I was hoping that it’d wow me, especially being the first box of the year. Nope. It is good, though, for a clean, fresh-faced feeling to start the year. While I love the mask and like the body scrubber, I got nothing truly exciting. And one mediocre makeup product. Sigh. This is my fourth box, and I loved the other three, so I’ll give them a chance for February, but they’ll need to do much better than this to keep my attention, especially now that I’m discovering other options. I’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, if you’d like to check out Glossybox, you can find more details here.

Are there any subscriptions you particularly like? Any you’ve found lacking?
