ipsy December 2016 Review

Hi, all!

My December ipsy Glam Bag arrived a few days ago, and since I’ve enjoyed them so far, I couldn’t wait to tear into it. I’ll show you what I got, and be warned – this post is pretty picture-heavy. Let’s get to it!

The bag

This month’s bag is a cute one, and is holiday-appropriate. It’s red and fuzzy, shot through with strands of metallic red for a bit of shine. Its fuzziness reminds me of an ugly sweater, which is cool. It’s a deep berry or maroon color, not really a true red, but it can still be worn with a holiday outfit. It’s got a gold (nylon?) lining, which is good because if something were to leak, it likely wouldn’t bleed through to the fabric.

My rating: 8/10

NYX Prismatic Shadow in Fireball

I’m already a fan of NYX for its attention to quality paired with affordable prices. This shadow is no exception. Fireball is described as “a hot reddish-rose shade”. To my eye, it’s a metallic orange. *shrugs* I love the shade, and this is precisely the one I’d have chosen in the store. I like the foil-y finish, and ease of blending. I experienced a bit of fallout, but not enough to keep me from using it.

My rating: 9/10

Hikari Liquid Eyeliner in Iris

Iris is a deep, blackened purple that I simply love. Unfortunately, the formula didn’t work well for me. I experienced a lot of skipping, and did a lot of shaking it, pressing its tip, and anything I could think of to get it out. I thought, at first, it was because of the foil finish of the eyeshadow, but after trying it with a matte shadow, I got the same result. I was disappointed, because I like the color so much, and because the tip of this eyeliner is amazing. It comes to the perfect point, and even after all the scrubbing and pressing I did trying to get it to work, it held its shape like a champ.

My rating: 6/10

Here’s another look I did with this liner…I’m so determined, lol.

Jersey Shore Cosmetic Peppermint Moisture Rich Hydrating Balm

I saw this and was disappointed, because, as a rule, I hate peppermint lip balm. This one had the word “delicious” printed on the packaging, and I rolled my eyes a bit. I was pleasantly surprised to find it isn’t exactly “flavored”…it just contains peppermint essential oil. I love that there’s no nasty-tasting sweetener in this lip balm, just the invigorating tingle of peppermint. I’ve been using it every day. It keeps my lips juicy and super soft, and according to the packaging, it can be used on the face and body for any dry bits! I love a multitasking product like this, and it’s right on time for winter.

MAKE Moonlight Primer

This primer is fascinating! It comes out a transparent black gel, but goes on clear. It’s touted as offering some protection against the aging effects of HEV, a type of artificial light emanating from cellular phones and other electronic devices. This was my first silicone-free primer, and I love the formula. Application was smooth, but most impressive was its mattifying properties. It does an excellent job of keeping me shine-free for hours. The only problem I have is that it causes my makeup to cake in areas where I have acne and scarring. This happens even when I pile on the oil and moisturizer. Next time I’ll try using my regular primer on just those spots. The rest of my face saw what may be the most smooth, matte finish I’ve ever achieved. I went at least six hours before any oil broke through.

My rating: 9/10

tarte cosmetics tarteist glossy lip paint in wcw

wcw is a classic cranberry color that would complement nearly any complexion. This gloss is extremely pigmented, so much so that it looks nice even as it starts to wear away. It’s super shiny, but isn’t sticky, which is a relief. It feels good on my lips, though it’s a little heavy, and my lips feel good after removing it. It’s not drying, so this will be a winter go-to lippie for a nice pop of color.

My rating: 9/10

Besides being disappointed in the eyeliner’s performance (but that color! *sniffles*), I have to say, ipsy did another bang-up job with curating this bag. I’m shocked that the standout for me is lip balm. (Peppermint, of all things!) This bag is full of products I know I’ll be using, so it’s another win.
